How we handle your information when you use our website
Betknowmore UK is a registered charity in England and Wales (charity number 1190760). Our registered office is 200A Pentonville Road, London, N1 9JP.
For the purposes of data protection law, Betknowmore UK is the “data controller” of the personal information described in this policy. That means we decide how and why it is used.
We are registered with the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) under registration reference ZA182377.

This policy explains what happens to your information when you visit or use our website at www.betknowmoreuk.org. It covers:
• browsing our pages
• sending us a message through our contact form
• making a donation through our website
• enquiring about our training programmes, workplace wellbeing services or corporate partnerships
• emailing us using an address published on our site
This policy does not cover our support services. If you contact us for help, are referred to us, or take part in Peer Aid, New Beginnings, GOALS or any of our other services, we will give you a separate, fuller privacy notice explaining how we handle information about the support you receive. It also does not cover our staff, volunteers or trainees, who receive their own privacy notices.
Some of the buttons on our website — including “Get help” — take you to forms hosted by another company on our behalf. When that happens, you are leaving our website, and the information you enter is covered by our service privacy notice rather than this one.
We understand that many people come to this website at a difficult moment, and that simply visiting a gambling support website can feel like a private act. We take that seriously.
You do not have to give us your name, or any other personal detail, to read anything on this site. All of our information, advice and resources are free to read anonymously.
We do not sell your information. We do not share it with gambling companies. We do not use it to advertise to you, and we do not allow anyone else to use it to advertise to you.
Our contact form asks for your first name, last name, email address, a subject and your message. We use this only to read and reply to what you have sent.
• Our lawful basis: legitimate interests —it is in both your interests and ours that we can answer the enquiries people send us.
• How long we keep it: 12 months from your last contact with us, unless your message becomes part of a longer piece of work such as a complaint, in which case we keep it for as long as that requires.
Please do not use the contact form to tell us detailed personal information about your health, your gambling or your finances. It is not a secure or confidential support channel. If you need support, please use the “Get help” route or the National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133, which is free and open 24 hours a day.
Donations made through our website are handled by the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF), using a CAF Donate form embedded in our donate page. Corporate donations are handled by PayPal. Your card details are entered directly into CAF’s or PayPal’s systems. We never see or hold your card number.
CAF or PayPal will pass us the details we need to record and thank you for your gift —typically your name, email address, postal address, the amount, and whether you have made a Gift Aid declaration.
• Our lawful bases: performance of a contract (processing your donation); legal obligation (Gift Aid records, and our accounting duties as a charity); and legitimate interests (thanking you and keeping proper records of our supporters).
• How long we keep it: where you have made a Gift Aid declaration, we must keep the record for at least six years after the end of the accounting period it relates to, as HM Revenue & Customs requires. Other donation records are kept for seven years.
If you email one of our published addresses — such as info@, volunteer@, recruitment@ ormedia@betknowmoreuk.org — we will hold your message and reply to it.
• Our lawful basis: legitimate interests (responding to you), or steps taken at your request before entering a contract, if you are applying to work or volunteer with us.
Like most websites, ours collects some information about your visit automatically. This includes your IP address, the type of device and browser you are using, your approximate location (usually to city level), which pages you visited, how long you stayed and which website sent you to us.
We use this to keep the site working, keep it secure, and understand which of our pages people find useful so that we can improve them.
Some of this happens through cookies and similar technologies, which are explained in the next section.
A cookie is a small file stored on your device when you visit a website. Similar technologies, such as local storage and session recording scripts, work incomparable ways. We group them as follows.
These are needed for the website to work and to keep it secure. They cannot be switched off, and we do not need your permission to use them.
These help us understand how people use the site. We only use these if you agree. You can change your mind at any time.
About session recording. Microsoft Clarity can record a replay of how a visitor moved through our website. We have configured it so that anything you type in to a form is hidden from us. We do not use it to try to identify individual visitors, and we do not connect it to any support service record. If you would rather it did not run at all, decline analytics cookies and it will not load.
Our pages use typefaces and code libraries hosted by Google (Google Fonts) and Amazon WebServices. Loading these means your IP address is disclosed to those companies. We are working to host these files ourselves so that this no longer happens.
When you first arrive on our site you will be asked whether you accept analytics cookies. You can change your answer at any time using the “Cookie settings” link in our footer.
You can also block or delete cookies through your browser settings. Doing so may stop parts of the site working properly.
• Our lawful basis: your consent, under the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations 2003 and the UK GDPR.
• How long we keep it: analytics data and session recordings are both kept for 14 months, after which they are deleted.
If you sign up for news or updates from us, we will use your email address to send them.

We use a small number of trusted suppliers who handle information on our behalf, under contracts that require them to protect it and to use it only as we instruct. These are:
We may also share information where we are required to by law, or where it is necessary to protect someone’s life or safety.
We do not sell your personal information, and we never share it with gambling operators or their marketing partners.
Some of our suppliers are based in, or store information in, the United States. Where information leaves the UK, we make sure it is protected by one of the safeguards that UK law recognises — usually the UK International Data Transfer Addendum to the European Commission’s standard contractual clauses, or the UK Extension to the EU–US Data Privacy Framework where the supplier is certified under it.
You can ask us for more detail about any particular transfer using the contact details in section 1.
We take appropriate technical and organisational measures to keep your information safe. These include encrypting information in transit, restricting access to those who need it, requiring multi-factor authentication on our systems, and training our staff and volunteers in data protection.
No website can be completely secure, but we take our responsibilities here seriously and review our arrangements regularly.
Under UK data protection law you have the right to:
• be told how your information is used —which is what this policy is for
• ask for a copy of the information we hold about you
• have it corrected if it is wrong or incomplete
• ask us to delete it, in certain circumstances
• ask us to restrict how we use it, in certain circumstances
• object to us using it, including for direct marketing — if you object to marketing, we will always stop
• ask us to transfer it to you or another organisation, in certain circumstances
• withdraw your consent at any time, where we rely on consent
To exercise any of these rights, contact us using the details in section 1. We will respond within one month. If your request is complex we may need longer, and we will tell you if that is the case. Exercising your rights is free.
If you are unhappy with how we have handled your information, please tell us first — we would like the chance to put it right.

Our services are for people aged 18 and over, and this website is aimed at adults. We do not knowingly collect information about children through this website. If you believe we have, please contact us and we will delete it.
Our website links to other organisations, including the National Gambling Support Network, GambleAware and support providers we signpost to. We are not responsible for how those websites handle your information, and we would encourage you to read their own privacy policies.
We review this policy regularly and will update it when our practices change. The date at the top shows when it was last changed. If we make a significant change, we will make that clear on this page.
